Articles in Orbit - A fashion-centric exhibition from Mary Stanley Studio closes soon

October 05, 2024

Articles in Orbit

Final day of exhibition: Sunday, October 6, 2024

Address: Atlanta Contemporary
535 Means St NW, Atlanta, GA 30318

Be sure to stop by Atlanta Contemporary before this exciting exhibition comes to a close. Articles in Orbit is a fashion-centric exhibition that presents eye-catching photo, video, and mixed media installation pieces by six contemporary photographers: Jamil Fatti, Sarah Hobbs, Xin Liu, Christopher Sonny Martinez, Tatum Shaw and Wisdom Warner.

Articles in Orbit is the newest exhibition from Mary Stanley Studio, building on the exhibition series Fashion Statement, created in 2008. Documenting the latest fads in contemporary fashion and futuristic fine art photography, this installment zeroes in on the magnetism of certain fashion choices and the emerging importance of personal style in the 21st Century. Venturing beyond mere ‘editorial’ these six artists warp, probe, and pioneer to document contemporary aesthetics that come from intense and personal self-curation. Here, accessories exist as catalysts, risk-taking is exalted, and the fashion statements hint at chaos. The messy. The fresh. The “I didn’t see that coming”.

The Atlanta Contemporary will feature a collection of large-scale portraits by Xin, Shaw, Warner, Hobbs, and Fatti. Featured also are photographic etchings on mirror glass by Christopher Sonny Martinez, as well as two digital video installations by Martinez and Xin, and five hand-crafted pocketbooks from Hobbs’ Portable Utopias series.

For the third edition of Atlanta Art Week, Georgia State’s Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design is collaborating with the University of Georgia’Lamar Dodd School of Art for a group exhibition titledHOMEWORK, featuring graduate students enrolled in two of Georgia's anchor art university programs. Curated by Athens-based artist Didi Dunphy, HOMEWORK will be on view at The Works, a mixed-use development in Atlanta’s Upper Westside, from October 1 through October 6, 2024.

This marks the second year AAW has collaborated with universities in the capacity of an MFA exhibition. These partnerships are important in providing MFA students with a platform to present their work in real-world contexts, further nurturing the local art ecosystem. This partnership enhances education in the fine arts and equip students with the skills to network and discuss their work with collectors, journalists, curators, and a broader audience. Such collaborations are vital for highlighting the talent emerging from esteemed institutions in the Southeast.

“Visiting these students' workspaces and studios has been invigorating,” says Didi Dunphy. “A sense of experimentation, wonder and hard work is evident in their pursuit. This exhibition is an exciting opportunity to preview an upcoming cohort of Georgia-based artists launching into the professional field, as well as offering a fun collegial collaboration between the University of Georgia and Georgia State University.” Second- and third-year graduate candidates in HOMEWORK, working in a range of media, including metals, fiber, photography, and paper-making, explore concepts such as climate concern, identity politics, beauty, and storytelling.

“At Georgia State University, we value studio artists who approach their work in an experimental and collaborative way," said Director Michael White. "We welcome the opportunity to work alongside talented peers at institutions like the University of Georgia. With our former director and alumnus Joseph Peragine leading the program at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, a natural partnership turned into a rich opportunity for our MFAs. I am eager to see the work Didi Dunphy has curated for the show, which will be an Atlanta Art Week highlight for our school community.”

Experiments in Utopia by Sarah Hobbs @ The Swan Coach House Gallery

September 25, 2024

Experiments in Utopia

Sarah Hobbs

Curated by Ashley Kauschinger

Opening Reception: Thursday, September 26th, 6-9 pm Artist Talk: Saturday, October 19th, 3 pm
Exhibition Dates: September 26th - October 31st
Address: 3130 Slaton Dr NW, Atlanta, GA 30305

ATLANTA – The Swan Coach House Gallery is pleased to present Experiments in Utopia, a photography and installation exhibition featuring works by Sarah Hobbs. The exhibition is curated by Ashley Kauschinger.

Step into the parallel world meticulously crafted by Sarah Hobbs in her new solo exhibition, Experiments in Utopia. Characteristically playful, psychological, and introspective, Hobbs constructs “utopian spaces” that reflect how we reckon with the self and the modern world. These works, inspired by surreal utopian spaces like wellness retreats, bunkers, cults, social media, and memory, are alternate realities outside of specific time and space. Through these imaginative constructs, Hobbs explores the utopian ways modern processes can create worlds of disconnection and self-avoidance that lead to feelings of marooned dissociation. Hobbs offers space to understand, live, remember, and converse with the self and contemporary world.

The exhibition features a range of mediums, including photographs, video, and sculptural installations. The video piece "Somewhat Fragile" investigates the personal utopia of the mind and nostalgia through intimate, diaristic photographs, exploring the delicate and pliable nature of memory. Sculptural works titled "Portable Utopias" construct transportable realities, acting as travel first aid kits for the mind and offering viewers a tangible escape. The photograph "Romanticizing Your Life" delves into the pandemic-born trend of viewing oneself as the main character in a constructed narrative, a utopic coping strategy that extends beyond the pandemic and social media. Through these diverse works, Hobbs invites viewers to reflect on the intricate interplay between ourselves, our surroundings, and society in shaping our psychological outlooks.

Sarah Hobbs

John Collection, among others. Hobbs’s work was featured in a solo exhibition at the Knoxville Museum of Art, Silver Eye Center for Photography in Pittsburgh, PA, and the Indianapolis

Museum of Contemporary Art. Her work has been included in several shows across the country and abroad. Her first monograph, Small Problems in Living, was published in 2012.
